We know that the key to physical well-being and spiritual evolution is prana. Prana flows through the subtle passageways known as the nadis. Nadis become blocked by samskaras (past mind impressions) as well as by external factors such as contradictory foods and misguided emotions and attitudes. When we meditate and do pranayama, we are basically cleansing the nadis. Ayurveda is a subtle science that cleanses the nadis so that the prana can flow and work freely. Once the prana flows appropriately to a diseased organ or tissue or cell, it balances out the vata, pitta, or kapha doshas, and balanced, perfect health is restored. With balanced and perfect health, the body can then sit still to meditate and do spiritual practices. Otherwise, we need five pillows, lie down, sit up, etc., which is one of the obstacles on the spiritual path cited by Patanjali—the inability to sit still.
